PART 2 DAY 1 1. This picture shows a store which is clearly in bad condition. Clearly, it appears to be a sunny day which could lead to high temperatures. The location of the store looks like it is in a rural desert of some kind, yet there still are people in the photograph. This could go to show how desperate some people were during the Great Depression. The peoples’ clothing look a little worn out and covered in filth. The people also look as if they’re as worn out as they’re clothes. Also, there is barely any vegetation noticeable in this photograph. There is only one tree behind the store. The tone of this picture looks light, yet negative. The fact that it is a sunny day adds to it being light. However, the conditions of the store, environment, and the people look negative.http://memory.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/I?fsaall:8:./temp/~ammem_eQcC::displayType=1:m856sd=fsa:m856sf=8c52062:@@@
2. In this photograph, there are a couple houses surrounding the background with drying-up corn next to the houses. First of all, the houses look like they’re in poor condition. There is no color on them or even the wood covering the outer-part of the houses. The corn in the fields look as bad as the houses. The fields the corn was growing in are dried up and are killing the vegetation. The sun must beat down on this location very often every day. All the work that farmers had to go through just to stay alive was all for nothing. This picture depicts the Great Depression mostly due to the location. If the owners of those house had more money, they would be able to move to a more improved living environment.http://memory.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/I?fsaall:2:./temp/~ammem_ubDh::displayType=1:m856sd=fsa:m856sf=8b29573:@@@
3. In this photograph, there is a church located in an isolated cotton field near Greensboro, Alabama. To start off, there is no vegetation to be seen in this picture. There is only a couple of dead trees behind the church. Also, the cotton doesn’t look sufficient enough to be picked and brought to factories. In fact, there is barely any cotton at all in that field. The field gets too much sun during the day, and not enough water. The church itself doesn’t look too good either. Also, there isn’t any sign of people around. There doesn’t even seem to be a road. The tone of the photograph looks negative. It depicts an abandon, broken-down church in the middle of nowhere near a shoddy cotton field.http://memory.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/I?fsaall:19:./temp/~ammem_zPcF::displayType=1:m856sd=fsa:m856sf=8c05762:@@@-Patrick S.
PART 2 DAY 2
1.This photograph shows a building titled "Hotel Clark." Under the title is the slogan, "The best service ever for colored only.” The picture was taken by Marion Post Wolcott on October of 1939 in Memphis, Tennessee. As seen in the photo, there are several black people standing outside their favoring hotel. This photograph depicts what many saw during discriminatory times. White peopleweren’t allowed to go to certain places and black people weren’t allowed to go to certain places. The hotel seems to be in an urban location due to the power lines and cars lining the street. The tone of this photograph could be negative. This is so because many people wouldn’t want to remember this certain time in history when people were separated because of their skin color.http://lcweb2.loc.gov/pnp/ppmsc/00100/00197r.jpg 2.This photograph was taken by Marion Post Wolcott in November of 1939 in Durham, North Carolina. The photo shows a café titled “Farmers Café” during a sunny day. Above the entrance door to the café is a sign that reads “WHITE.” Inside the café are a couple of middle-aged, well-dressed white people sitting down. The café looks like it could be in an urban town. (The reflection in the window shows power lines and another building right across the street.) The tone of this picture is negative. This is so because only white people could enjoy that café, not black people.http://lcweb2.loc.gov/pnp/ppmsc/00200/00214r.jpg 3.This photo graph was taken by Marion Post Wolcott in November of 1939 in Leland, Mississippi on a sunny day. The photo shows a movie theater titled, “REX THEATRE FOR COLORED PEOPLE.” Outside of the urban movie theater are two black people. I believe that the feature that catches your eye first is the “…FOR COLORED PEOPLE” part of the sign. White people know that they are not welcome to that specific movie theater. The tone of this photograph is negative. Many people distinguish discriminatory times as negative times. That is why Martin Luther King stood against those laws and succeeded in abolishing them.http://lcweb2.loc.gov/pnp/ppmsc/00200/00219r.jpg Patrick S.

This photograph was taken in 1941 by Jack Delano. It is a picture of an African-American ex-slave. She is very, very elderly. You can see the inside of her house, and how it is sparsley decorated and small. This is a very sad, depressing photo. The woman is extremely wrinkled and old, and she looks sad and serious. It is a dark photo, and the mood is very heavy.
Write two questions that you might ask the photographer or the subjects of the picture if you had the opportunity to learn more about the photograph or / and its subject(s).
If I could ask the photographer two questions, they would be 1) Did the woman seem sad or angry to you? & 2) How did you feel as you took this photo?
